Strengths: Okudah possesses very good height and adequate weight for his position, slender athletic build with very good length. His very good athletic ability translates to elite foot speed with elite change of direction, and elite hip fluidity needed to be a lockdown corner. Displays very good mental processing in both man and zone coverage allowing routes to develop so he can properly leverage them. Okudah wins in press coverage with very good line of scrimmage abilities due to his patience and exceptional footwork. His patience allows him to trust his elite footwork and mirror all releases to put him in good position from the start of the play. He uses a smooth kick slide to cut off receivers on vertical releases to close space and squeeze receivers to the sideline, limiting the room for error the quarterback has on vertical routes. Transitions seamlessly in all phases of routes with elite hip fluidity that allows him to match route stems and play tight to receivers at the top of the break. He displays elite footwork that is consistently balanced, allowing him to show off his explosive COD abilities to break on the football once he diagnoses the route. His very good click and close abilities are evident in his comfort to let routes close on him in off-coverage so that he can play tight at all times. This patience in off coverage allows him to effectively break on routes in the quick game due to comfort reading his keys in the first couple steps. Once the ball is in the air, he uses is great arm length to consistently disrupt receivers at the catch point and make plays on the football. Solid in the run game when he is asked to respond or trigger in the boundary as a primary force player. A solid tackler in space when tasked with limiting yards after the catch.
Weaknesses: There aren’t many holes in Okudah’s game which is why he is the prospect that he is at this point. He’s excellent at the line of scrimmage but you ideally would like to see him use his length there more to reroute receivers. His excellence up to this point, alludes to his scary potential to be even more dominant at the LOS once he develops using his length by stabbing receivers early to further dictate the tempo in press-man. He has reps on tape where he stabs really well to reroute but he doesn’t use that technique as often as he should with the length that he has. A solid tackler though he could improve is consistency by allowing himself to close the space more instead of hesitating and giving the ball-carrier time to be creative.
Summary: Overall, Jeffery Okudah is a day one starting cornerback at the next level who you will win with because of his ability to take away a team’s top target. Possesses elite athletic ability that is accompanied by advanced technique and strong mental processing to play the position at an elite level. Will consistently make plays on the football due to his knack for always being in position as a sticky defender who is competitive in coverage on a high number of throws in his coverage. Can take his game to another level at the line of scrimmage when he decides to use his incredible arm length and reroute receivers more at the line of scrimmage. Is scheme versatile due to his completeness as a cornerback. Ideally you would like to see him shadow a team’s best receiver every week because that is where his career is headed. Jeffery Okudah is an elite cornerback prospect who is an immediate starter and impact player.
