Strengths: Pittman has very good height and weight, displaying good athletic ability, with very good body control, good balance, acceleration, quickness, and solid lateral agility. Displays solid release packages, with good suddenness off the line with good hand fighting ability to keep hands off of him against press. Displays good route running ability attacking DB’s leverage to create two-way goes with good acceleration in and out of breaks. Good work avoiding re-routes throughout his stem with good wiggle and dips to avoid the contact. Good subtle hand usage to create separation at the last second to make a play on the ball. He displays outstanding ball skills, with very strong hands, he tracks the ball well and will show good timing on jump balls. He displays outstanding contested catch ability making catches all over his frame with defenders draped over him. He displays plus concentration and rarely drops the ball. He shows good mental processing to quickly identify coverages and find soft spots vs zones. He shows solid YAC ability winning with very good play strength and good balance to break tackles. Displays very good competitive toughness playing at a high level with high effort. He has a great work ethic and is an outstanding special teams player. He is best suited for the outside but can play as a big slot where he is an effective blocker. He is very good blocking to square defenders up with very good play strength and makes a huge impact here.
Weaknesses: He could work on having some more release packages against press. He is not very explosive working laterally, best working on a vertical plane. Route tree was a bit limited at USC. He does not always show great elusiveness in the open field and has adequate vision with the ball in his hands.
Summary: Michael Pittman Jr. projects to be a good WR at the next level. He wins with good route running ability and wins at the catch point with very strong tracking and catching ability. He is a strong player with a little bit of nuance to his game. He is best at contested catches and making plays on a vertical plane. Needs work on release game and not the most explosive YAC WR. He will be a great special teams player at the next level.
Grade: Early 2nd round/Starting Outside WR
